Chapter 7: Green Silk

Virginia waited until they were in Tobias's car before she said it.

"Who signs for the mail at your house?"

Tobias kept his eyes on the road.

"The housekeeper takes the post to a tray in the hall," he said. "My mother sorts it for the foundation. She's done that since Dad died."

"Your mother sorts it."

"She sorts everyone's."

"Tobias."

"My mother wouldn't do that," he said, and his hands tightened on the wheel. "Ask me anything else."

"I'm only asking who signs."

"I'll find out," he said. "Give me until Saturday."

She watched his jaw and decided to let it be.

The dress shop on Calder Street was a long white room with mirrors on three walls and a hush that cost money.

Greta had booked the whole shop for the afternoon, so nobody could see the fitting.

Tobias sat on a velvet bench by the window with his phone and didn't look at it once.

A tailor pinned the hem of a dark green silk gown on Virginia while she stood on the little round stage.

It was a deep green, and it fit her better than anything she'd owned in Maine.

"You'll be the only woman there who looks like she means it," the tailor said around a mouthful of pins.

The curtain of the next fitting room twitched.

Sisi stepped out of it in pale gold, holding her hair up with one hand.

She saw Virginia in the mirror and stopped.

"Oh," Sisi said. "You're beautiful."

"So are you."

"I look like a candle." Sisi laughed and lowered her voice. "Virginia, can I tell you something? Greta's in the front. She won't hear."
