Chapter 24: Tell Hayden
Apartment three on Wren Street took Lydia one afternoon to empty.
She had expected it to take a week.
She had lived there three years, and it came to four boxes, two suitcases and a cracked blue teapot.
Hayden carried the boxes down the stairs, two at a time, and did not complain.
On the second trip the old woman with the shopping cart was waiting in the hall.
"So you came back for her," she said to him.
"I did."
"Took you long enough."
"I know."
"Did you bring her home?"
"She's bringing me," Hayden said.
The old woman looked at Lydia, and her face creased.
"Good," she said. "I never liked the way she checked the hallway at four."
She pressed a paper bag into Lydia's hands.
It held six lemon biscuits, and they were still warm.
"For the plane," the old woman said. "And the next time you write to anybody, put a stamp on it."
Lydia hugged her, hard.
She had already said her goodbyes at the hospital that morning.
Her ward sister had cried, and given her a card signed by thirty children, and told her that if the Empire City hospital on Maple Street did not hire her at once, she would write them a letter herself.
There was a job waiting for her on Maple Street.
Henrietta had arranged it from her bed on the first call, and Lydia had told her never to do it again, and had accepted.
At four o'clock the last box was in the cab.
The postman came up the steps as Lydia locked the door of apartment three for the last time.
