Chapter 15: The Answer
The storm filled the narrow room.
Plaster fell from the ceiling. The chair went over. Every pane in the front windows blew out into the street.
Garrick went down on one knee and put a fist against the floor.
He was shaking, and he did not make a sound.
Lucan stood three paces away with his hands open and his heart going hard.
It would have been easy. One step. One palm.
He kept his feet where they were.
"Say it," he said.
"Say what?"
"Why you wrote that line. Why you came here at dawn with a house behind your back. Say it all."
Garrick lifted his head.
The gray eyes were bloodshot, and they met Lucan's without any shield.
"You walked across a ballroom," Garrick said.
"I did."
"I watched you do it. Four years of you at court, and you never once looked up from the floor. Then you took your glove off and came straight at me."
"Yes."
"And I thought, he's seen me." His voice cracked. "I thought, finally. Someone has walked up to me on purpose."
Lucan said nothing.
"Then you said it. I want your uncle." Garrick breathed in. "It wasn't about me. It was a move in a fight with a man who wasn't even looking at you."
A beam over the door groaned.
"I'm not asking you to say it was more," Garrick said. "I took it. I'd have taken it any way it came. I'd have taken a lie. But I will not own you for it, and I won't keep you by law. That's what the clause is for. You can walk out of that door tonight and my house will still stand behind your roof."
His hands had begun to bleed where the gloves were torn.
