Chapter 19: I'm Glad You Understand
The shuttle docked with Transport Two in a shriek of tearing metal.
Hull plates bowed outward all down the passenger corridor. Emergency lamps swung on their cables.
Two hundred recruits stood against the walls with their hands over their ears.
Garrick came off the shuttle first with his gloves off, and Lucan came behind him, and Corin behind them both.
"Fall back to the bow," Garrick told the nearest officer. "All of you. Now."
The officer ran, and the recruits ran after her.
At the end of the corridor, a door hung from one hinge.
Perrin was inside.
He knelt in the middle of a ruined cabin with his arms around his head. The floor around him was cracked in a perfect circle, and every light in the room had burst.
Six Bureau Drones lay on the deck at the edge of the circle, alive and gasping, with blood on their lips.
They had tried, and none of them had held.
"Luc," Perrin said.
He looked up.
His eyes were swollen and his skin was gray. There was blood running from one ear.
"Luc, you came."
"I came for the ship," Lucan said.
"Please." Perrin held out a shaking hand. "It's so loud. I've never felt it this loud. You're the only one who ever made it quiet."
Lucan stayed in the doorway.
The hull groaned. A pipe overhead split and sprayed white steam across the circle.
"I could do it," Lucan said.
His voice was perfectly level.
"I know exactly how. I'd cross the room and put my hands on your face, and it would stop in a breath. I have felt it a thousand times, and I've never failed."
"Then do it!"
"No."
Perrin stared at him.
"You asked me to give you up," Lucan said. "In front of three hundred people, with your husband holding your wrist. You called my six years management. You said your storms were too big for me, and you said it kindly."
