Chapter 4: The Gate

Perrin stood outside the iron gate with his coat torn at the shoulder.

His fair hair was wild, and three press drones circled over his head with their lenses red.

The glass in the gatehouse had already gone.

Behind him a black car idled at the curb with its door open.

"Uncle!" Perrin shouted. "Give him back!"

Garrick walked down the drive with Lucan beside him and Corin one step behind.

The household watched from every window.

"Open the gate," Garrick said.

"Marshal," Corin said quietly. "He's storming."

"I know. Open it."

The gate swung wide, and the hum in the air nearly knocked Lucan off his feet.

Perrin took a step in.

"You kidnapped my fiance," he told the nearest drone. His voice cracked on the last word. "He's sick, he doesn't know what he's doing, and my uncle is using him."

"Your fiance," Garrick said, "is my husband. The Chief Registrar signed it last night in front of three hundred people. Shall I read you the page?"

"He's only a C. He'll burn out in a week."

"Then I'll bury him with honors."

Lucan looked at Garrick in surprise, and Garrick did not look back.

Perrin turned his blue eyes on Lucan. They were bloodshot, and his lids were shaking.

"Luc," he said, and his voice dropped to the one Lucan had known for six years. "Come settle me. You always did. You promised you would."

"I promised my fiance," Lucan said.

"I'm still the same person."

"You sent me two lines through a lawyer."

"I was being kind! I didn't want a scene." Perrin's voice rose. "Everyone said it was kinder to do it quickly. You don't know how hard it was to say it!"
