Chapter 17: The Panel
The ethics panel met in the boardroom on the sixth floor, under a framed photograph of Walter Everhart cutting a ribbon.
Five people sat behind a long table.
The board chair was a gray man with a legal pad.
The chief executive sat beside him with his hands pressed together.
A lawyer from the Foundation sat at the end with a folder squared in front of her.
Dalton sat beside her in his charcoal suit.
He did not look at me.
I sat alone in a chair facing them with a glass of water I had not touched.
Bev sat behind me, and Niles sat beside Bev in a borrowed suit that fit him across the shoulders for the first time.
"Dr. Pallister," the board chair said.
"The complaint alleges that you began an intimate relationship with a patient who lacked the capacity to consent.
Do you wish to respond?"
"Yes."
I stood up.
"He was never incapacitated.
A psychiatrist examined him on his second day, in writing, and found his judgment fully intact.
It's in his chart, and I'd like it read into the record."
