At one in the morning I stood in the courtyard in my fleece with my mother's ring box in one pocket and the green notebook in the other, and told Rocco I was going home.
"Home," he said.
"My flat."
He stood on the kitchen step with the light behind him.
The old men's cars had gone.
The fig tree stood in its burlap like a small tied prisoner, and the man on the gate was looking very hard at the street.
"It's been torn apart," Rocco said.
"The door doesn't close.
"There's a bed with a slit mattress."
"It's mine," I said.
"Grace, I'll send someone to put it right.
"Stay one more night."
"Rosaria wants me at her table on Sunday," I said.
"I'll be at it.
"That's not the same as a locked window."
He didn't answer.
I looked at him in the cold air, and I let myself say the thing I had been carrying since the wheelhouse.
"You took me off a dock," I said.
"You put me in a car in front of everyone I work with.
"You gave me a rule.
"I've broken it, and I'm going to keep breaking it, and you can send your driver after me if you like."
"I won't."
"Then let me say what I need.
"Out loud, so you know."
He came down off the step and stopped three feet from me.
"Say it," he said.
"I need my father alive and found.
"I need my name out of this, with the family, with the old men, with every person who heard you on that dock.
