Chapter 15: Her Kitchen Floor
Rocco's POV
I fixed her door lying on my back on a linoleum floor, with a flashlight in my teeth.
The hinge had been pried off by someone with a bar and no patience.
I had two new screws and a brass plate from the hardware store, and I put them in one at a time, because it was the only part of the night I knew how to do.
Grace sat on a kitchen chair with her feet up on the rung and the pie box open on her knees.
She had cut herself a slice and was eating it with a fork, out of the box, without a plate.
She had said, "Don't get comfortable," and then, "There's a mug in the sink that isn't broken," and I had made myself coffee.
I had not been given a seat.
I did not want one.
"Say it," she said.
"The whole thing.
"Not the apology.
"What you did."
I took the flashlight out of my teeth.
I looked at the ceiling of her kitchen, where there was a brown water stain in the shape of Rhode Island.
"I lost my brother in March," I said.
"I found him myself.
"There's a turnout on the Cranston road where the trucks stop, and he was in it, in his own car, with the door open."
She put down the fork.
"I don't have to..."
"You asked for what I did," I said.
"I'm telling you."
I turned the screwdriver a half turn.
"I told myself it was the books.
"I put a dozen men on the road.
"I sent them to Worcester and Portland and a bus station in Bangor.
"Three of them didn't come back.
"One went through the ice on a lake in Maine looking for your father's car.
"One got shot by a man in a trailer who thought he was something else.
"The third drank himself into a ditch, and I sent his widow money every month and I haven't looked at her since."
Her face had gone very still.
"I broke a man's fingers in a restaurant kitchen on Valley Street because he said he'd seen Toby on a bus.
