Chapter 13: Day Forty-One

Neil's POV

I had pictured her standing in front of that wall a hundred times, and in none of them was I holding a gun.

I put it on the kitchen counter and kept my hands open where she could see them.

Cora stood in the narrow room with her flashlight on the red thread.

"Day forty-one," she said. "Start there."

"They gave me the burner's records at the end of the sixth week," I said. "One call was logged at eleven forty-two at night, from your car."

"And?"

"Your car was towed at nine-fifteen. It was sitting in the impound lot with a chain through the wheel."

She said nothing, so I kept going.

"I read the log nine times. I drove to the lot, and the clerk showed me the sign-in book. Nobody had touched that car."

"Anyone can read a time wrong."

"Not nine times, Cora. You didn't make that call. Somebody inside Major Crimes built the case, and they built it to hold."

"So you went to the chief."

"I went to nobody. I had stood at your memorial and called you a disgrace in front of four hundred people. Whoever built it was watching to see what I did next."

She lowered the flashlight a little.

"When did it become Paula?"

"The second year. She was the only one who ever asked about the phone log, and she asked every time I'd been near the file room."

"And she proposed."

"She asked me over soup. I could say no and make her wonder why, or say yes and live in the house where she kept the notebook."
