Chapter 4: Half a Bed

Anqi found a clean pair of cotton pajamas and held them out.

"Top and bottom," she said. "They'll be long on you."

Mengyao took them, disappeared into the bathroom, and came out with the sleeves rolled four times and the trouser cuffs puddled over her bare feet.

"You're a giant," she said.

"You're compact."

"That's what you call it?"

"It's what I call it when I'm being careful."

Mengyao looked at the bed and the two pillows.

Then she picked one up and stood it on its end down the middle of the mattress.

"There," she said. "A wall."

"A very sturdy wall."

"It's decorative."

Anqi switched off the lamp.

The room went dark except for a thin line of streetlight under the curtain.

For a long minute they lay on their backs, one on each side of the pillow, listening to the quiet apartment.

"Anqi."

"Mm."

"Are you seeing anyone?"

Anqi stared at the ceiling.

"No."

"Were you?"

"For two years. Her name was Lan. She wanted to move to Shenzhen, and I wanted to stay at my desk. We were both kind about it, and it still hurt."

"Is that why you were so calm at dinner?"

"I'm calm because I've had practice," Anqi said. "It doesn't mean it's easy."

The mattress shifted.

Mengyao had rolled onto her side to face her.

"I've never dated anyone," she said into the dark. "Not really. Two dinners my mother arranged. One boy in college who held my hand once and I said I had a stomach ache."

"Did you?"

"No. I just didn't want it. I thought something was wrong with me."
