Chapter 15: The Price
Lucan's POV
I had run the whole south ridge with my hands open, and I'd left my coat in a ditch so nobody could say I came armed.
My wolf hadn't helped.
She had been quiet for days, sullen and far down, and I ran on two legs because I had nothing else to run on.
Dessa stood in the middle of Haskell's hall with thirty wolves around her, and she didn't turn around.
She knew my step, and she didn't turn.
"Alpha Ferris," Haskell said warmly. "What a surprise."
"You're holding one of mine."
"A guest. She's been eating pie."
"Then I'll take her place."
I said it to the whole hall, in the Alpha's voice, and it carried to the back wall.
"Lucan," Dessa said, low.
"The cook goes home. The Luna goes home. I stay as your guest until the third moonrise."
"And what makes you think I'd want you?" Haskell said.
"You've wanted Cold Ridge for four years. I'm the closest you'll get without a fight."
He laughed, delighted.
"There's one more condition," he said, and the smile thinned. "No claws. No shift, no matter what's done. Break that, and your Luna and her cook don't reach the fence."
I looked at Dessa.
She was looking at me now, white-faced, with her hands in fists.
"Done," I said.
"Lucan, no."
"Go home, Dessa."
"I'm not leaving you in here."
"You have a ring to stand in." I kept my voice level. "Osric needs you tonight. Kari needs a bed. Go."
"You can't ask me to walk out and leave you."
"I'm not asking."
