Chapter 24: Every Moon

The tenth moon was due at a quarter to seven, and Lucan left the pack house at four.

He took a blanket and a thermos of Kari's coffee.

"It's nearly three hours early," I said, from the bed.

"I want to check the stones."

"You checked the stones yesterday."

"They may have moved."

"Lucan."

He leaned down and kissed me, slowly and thoroughly, and I felt the thread between us hum.

"I'm not going to be late again," he said against my mouth. "Not by a minute. Not for a hundred years."

"That isn't a reason to be three hours early."

"It's a very good reason."

He went out whistling.

I lay there with my hands behind my head, warm all the way through, and listened to him cross the yard.

I took my time getting dressed.

Kari turned up at the door at five with a stack of folded blankets and a covered dish.

"He's up there," she said. "I saw him go. He took a rake."

"A rake?"

"For the leaves in the ring. He's been at them since half past four. I told him the leaves are fine."

I laughed so hard I had to sit on the stairs.

We walked up to the slope together as the light went.

Osric went ahead of us on his stick, and half of Cold Ridge was strung out along the path behind.
