Chapter 8: Terms
I shifted back behind the horse stable, with Kari holding a blanket up between me and the whole valley.
"Don't say a word," I said through my teeth.
"I wasn't going to."
"You're about to."
"I'm only going to say," Kari said, "that I've worked with you for six years, and I would pay money to see Haskell's face again."
I laughed, and it shook out of me so hard my knees went.
She wrapped me up and held on.
When I walked back out, Corwin Haskell was standing at the gate with his twenty wolves behind him, silent, with their heads still low.
He did not smile.
"You'll cross back over the ridge," I said. "All of you."
"Yes," he said.
"And you'll stay on your side of it."
"For now."
"For as long as I say."
His pale eyes came up to mine.
He was thinking, and I watched him do it.
"As you like, Luna," he said.
I said, "I'm not anyone's Luna."
"We'll see," Corwin said, and he went.
The hall was packed again when I walked in.
The council had never moved.
The tin still sat on the table with its lid off.
Osric sat at the head, with his hands folded on his stick, and he did not look surprised to see me in a blanket and Lucan's grey coat, which somebody had handed me.
"The Moon's release stands," he said, to the room. "She outranks the seal. There is no question to hear."
"Then the bond is gone," the woman beside him said slowly.
"The bond is gone."
Lucan stood by the window again.
He was in a clean shirt, and his jaw was tight, and when I came in he looked up for the first time since the gravel.
