Chapter 10: Tavon's Mama's Cookout
Tavon's mama lived in Mableton in a brick ranch with a smoker in the backyard and thirty folding chairs on the grass.
She hugged me at the gate before anyone could say my name.
"You're the beer lady," she said. "Sit. Eat. Nobody leaves hungry here."
The cookout had moved to Thursday evening, after the shift, because of the holiday week.
I had brought a pound cake.
I had baked it myself in the townhouse oven the night before, with the stand mixer.
I carried it across the yard in both hands and felt somebody watching me.
Darius's mother sat in a lawn chair by the fence with a paper plate on her knee.
She was small and straight-backed, in a church-lady cardigan the color of plums, and she saw everything.
She looked at me and at the cake and at her son behind me, and she held out her arms.
"Come here, baby," she said.
I bent down and she hugged me.
She held on too long. I felt her hands pat my back twice.
"He smiles now," she said into my ear. "Thank you."
My eyes burned.
At the long table under the pecan tree I sat between Darius and a cousin.
