Chapter 24: The All-Hands
The door swung shut behind him.
Nobody spoke.
The succulent sat on the table with his badge leaning against it.
"Can he do that?" the young engineer asked. "Sign before nine?"
The general counsel opened his mouth.
I answered first.
"He can vote his shares until nine," I said. "He can't sign for the company. Not suspended."
The chair turned her head.
"Say that again."
"Section nine of the founder agreement. Only a chief executive in good standing signs for Kestrel. Suspension takes him out of good standing the minute you say it." I tapped the table. "You said it at nine-forty. I was listening."
The general counsel found the section on his laptop.
He read it twice, his lips moving.
"She's right," he said. "He can sign whatever he likes. It won't be the company's signature."
"Then the buyer's lawyers will see that," said the woman with the laptop.
"Only if somebody tells them before he holds up a pen," I said. "In front of the whole company."
The chair looked at me for a long moment.
"Eight-thirty," she said. "Be there."
That night I lay awake with Rosie asleep across my chest.
I didn't put her down.
I just let her be heavy.
At eight-fifteen on Friday, the neighbor came across the street again with her knitting.
"Two days in a row," she said. "I'm basically staff."
Kestrel's all-hands was in the big atrium on the ground floor.
There were four hundred people on the stairs, on the floor and along the mezzanine railing.
