Chapter 14: Uncle
I ran across the lawn and up the back stairs two at a time.
Posy was kneeling on the window seat in her pajamas with her palms flat on the glass.
The lamp was off.
She had been watching in the dark.
"Hey, sweetheart," I said, and sat down on the floor beside her.
She did not look at me.
"Daddy is bleeding," she said.
"He is. His nose got hurt."
"Uncle Valen did it."
My second rule was on the back of the contract: everyone in this house tells Posy the truth.
I took a breath.
"They had a big fight, and your uncle hit your daddy," I said. "It was wrong to hit.
"They are both very upset about something that happened a long time ago.
"I can't tell you all of it tonight.
"But I can tell you that nobody is leaving, and nobody is mad at you."
