Chapter 16: The Jeweler
Dermot's POV
The jeweler's shop was on West Forty-Seventh Street, between a pawn dealer and a watch repairman.
I had never set foot in it.
Dorian had made sure of that, when he put the invoice on top of a stack.
Now I stood at the counter with the invoice in my hand, and the young man behind the glass put a hand on the bell.
"The owner isn't in," he said.
"Then I'll wait."
"He's out until Thursday."
"Then I'll read him the invoice." I laid it flat. "Seven replica pieces, billed to Sterrett Holdings, signed C. Gorman. That's me."
"Sir."
"There's a woman in the news this morning who says her brother committed fraud with this. When the police read this page, they'll want my name and the owner's. I'd like to be the first one to explain."
His hand came off the bell.
He went into the back, and he came out with an old man in shirtsleeves who smelled of metal polish.
The old man looked at me for a long time.
"They told me it was for a gala," he said.
"Who told you?"
"The son. But the woman came first. Eight months ago, she sat where you're standing and asked me what seven old family pieces were worth to a private buyer."
My stomach turned over.
"What did you tell her?"
"Nearly two million. I gave her a name in Greenwich. She took a check and left."
"Write the name down," I said.
He wrote it on the back of the invoice.
I drove to Greenwich with the radio off.
For three years I had kept a wall between myself and the one thing I should have looked at.
