Chapter 17: Stairwell
At 7:44 on Thursday I stood at the north stairwell door with my badge in my hand.
Kyle stood one step behind me with his tie already loose.
I had picked the time.
I had waited until the clock on the wall of the west wing said four minutes to the minute the log had flagged.
Then I had walked over to his desk and said, "Janssen. Stairs."
Nobody had looked up.
Nobody had needed to.
I swiped, and the lock clicked, and I held the door for him.
The landing between three and two was cinderblock and fluorescent light, and it smelled of cold paint.
It was the same landing.
The door shut behind us with its heavy sound, and I turned around and put my back against the wall.
"Here?" he said.
"Here."
"They told us not to," he said.
"That's why."
He put his hand on the wall beside my head.
"They told you not to," he said. "I'd do it here if they'd said yes."
I took his tie and wrapped it once around my fist.
"I have wanted to do this since the day her email came," I said. "I have walked past this door every day since. I couldn't breathe."
"What do you want to do?"
"I want to stand in the exact spot where I was scared, and I want you to fuck me against it."
His hand dropped from the wall to my waist.
"Yes, ma'am."
"I haven't had anything on under this skirt since noon."
He went completely still.
"In the building. Before six."
"I know," I said. "I broke it again."
He made a sound low in his chest and kissed me, hard, with his whole mouth.
The stairwell took every sound and gave it back.
I got my hands into his shirt.
His hands went under my skirt, to bare skin, and he groaned against my teeth.
