Chapter 24: Collars Down
On the first Monday of the new year I woke before the alarm, in my own bed.
Kyle's arm lay across my stomach, and his breath was on my shoulder.
The lamp was on.
We had stopped turning it off in December.
Gray light was coming up behind the blinds.
The radiator ticked, and for once nothing in the world was in a hurry.
I turned over.
He was awake.
He had been awake for a while, lying on his side with his head on my pillow, looking at me.
"Morning," he said.
"What time is it?"
"Six," he said.
"We have an hour and a half."
"I know," he said. "I've been watching the clock."
I laughed, and put my hand on his jaw, and he turned his face into my palm and kissed it.
It was the slowest I had ever been touched.
There was no rule and no door and no cart in the hall.
He rolled me onto my back and settled over me, with his weight on his forearms on either side of my head.
He kissed me for a long time without going anywhere.
His mouth was warm and tasted of sleep.
I wound my fingers through the bristle on the back of his head.
I slid my legs up along his sides, and he moved his hips.
I felt how hard he was already against my thigh.
"Look at me," he said.
"I'm looking."
"Keep looking."
He pushed into me, inch by inch.
