Chapter 9: Brunch
Dawn had picked a diner in Benson with red vinyl booths and a waitress who called everyone hon.
She was already in the back booth when I got there at eleven, with two coffees and her arms folded.
"Sit," she said.
I sat.
"Don't lie to me," she said.
"I'm not going to," I said.
"Good. Because I have been a good friend for six years, and on Wednesday I saw your hair in the paper plates, and I said nothing. Nothing. Do you know what that cost me?"
"A lot," I said.
"I nearly burst a vessel," Dawn said. "Tell me everything."
So I did.
I leaned across the table and told her in a whisper, over a plate of hash browns neither of us touched.
The waitress topped off our coffee, and a man at the counter argued about the Huskers.
I told her about the elevator, and the stairwell, and the supply room.
I told her about the rules.
She listened with her mouth open and her wedding ring spinning.
When I got to the glass room she put both hands over her face.
