Chapter 15: Stand Where It Happened

Cora's POV

Agnes found the pages on the mat under the door, where they had been since three in the morning.

She handed them to me and the keys to her delivery van in the same breath.

"Go," she said. "I'll shape without you."

I read the statement in the van, at the red light on Water Street, with the dome light on.

It was four pages, typed, signed, and every line was plain.

By the third page I had stopped being able to see the words, and I wiped my eyes with the back of my wrist and kept going.

At the crest of the Hoan Bridge a police cruiser sat on the shoulder behind a black pickup with its hazards blinking.

I parked behind both of them.

My legs were not steady.

I walked up the shoulder in the dark with the wind in my face.

He stood at the rail with his hands on the iron and his back to me.

He did not turn around.

"Gabe," I said.

He turned then, slowly.

He had not slept in days, and it showed in his face.

"You came," he said.

"I read it."

"I'm sorry about the desk. I should have told you in my own words, in my own time, before you found it."

"Yes, you should have."

"I'm not going to say anything else unless you ask me."

"Good," I said. "Because I have questions, and you're going to answer every one of them standing right here."

I pointed at the rail.

"That's where I was."

"Yes."

"Show me where you were."

He walked ten feet back along the shoulder and stopped.

"Here," he said. "The truck slid until it hit you. When it stopped, I was looking at your taillights. They were broken. One of them was still on."
