Chapter 6: Keep Your Sixty Thousand
Lydia walked up to the counter and set her folder down on the glass.
"It won't take long," she said. "Dalton asked me to bring it, because he thinks you'd rather hear it from a friend."
"We are not friends."
"We were."
She opened the leather folder and slid a stapled packet across the glass.
The first page said Settlement and Confidentiality Agreement.
I read the numbers first.
Sixty thousand dollars, paid in one check, in exchange for my signature on three things.
A quick uncontested divorce.
A release of every claim against Hargrove Capital, including the money I had put in.
And a promise never to speak about Dalton Hargrove or Lydia Sayre to anyone, for any reason, for the rest of my life.
"Sixty thousand," I said.
"It's generous. It's a lot more than you'd get in court."
"I put in three hundred and eighty."
"You put it into an investment that lost value." She smiled gently. "The paperwork is clear."
The bell rang over the door, and it rang again.
It was twenty past six, the hour the Saturday line formed.
An old woman from the church was at the front with her tote bag, and behind her stood two firemen, a nurse, and the old man who bought rye every week and never spoke.
They had all stopped talking.
"Lydia," I said, loud enough to carry. "Are you telling me that if I sign this, I can never say you're pregnant by my husband?"
Her smile cracked.
"Cora. Not here."
"Or that he told me your father was dying, so he could leave me alone at our anniversary dinner?"
"You're upset."
"Or that I called him from a wrecked car, and he declined the call?"
