Chapter 13: The Fund
"Freja," Dean said. "This is a staff meeting."
"I know. I'm here for the staff."
She walked past me into the library and set the blue folder on the table beside the lemon cookies.
A woman in a navy coat sat at the back with a coffee and a legal pad.
I had seen her once before, at a spring assembly.
She was the district superintendent, and she had come to hear Dean announce the new year.
"Good morning, Superintendent," Freja said.
"I'm Freja Tolland, the principal's wife. I'll be quick."
"Freja, please," Dean said, and his voice had the soft warning in it that I had heard him use on freshmen.
"Six winters," Freja said. "Six winter trips to Northern Pines, billed to this school as a leadership retreat."
She opened the folder.
"Here are the expense claims."
"Lodging for two tents, one in his name and one in hers."
"And a seminar fee for a seminar that doesn't exist."
The superintendent put down her pen.
"Whose name is on the second tent?" she asked.
"Lindsay Niskanen," Freja said. "A pediatric nurse. She's the wife of the teacher you just watched him suspend."
Forty heads turned toward me.
I stood by the door with my bag on my shoulder and felt every one of them.
"That's a private matter," Dean said.
"It's twelve thousand dollars of school money," Freja said. "I pay your credit card bill, Dean. I found the receipts on the kitchen table where you left them, because you never thought I looked."
