Chapter 11: The Empty Lab

I stared down at the message.

Then I read it out loud.

Will sat back against the brick and swore, softly and thoroughly.

"Seven," he said. "Who flipped?"

"I don't know yet."

"Can he even do that? Move it up?"

"Any five trustees can call an emergency session. It's in the bylaws." I put the phone face down on the iron slats. "Section seven. Patrice would know the paragraph."

"So we've got ten days."

"Ten days to prove the Sternes are robbing this school," I said. "Not suspect it. Prove it, in front of the board, out loud."

Will looked across the yard at the dark basement windows.

"Then we start with the lab," he said. "Before they clean it out."

"They've had three days since you walked Tyler to his car."

"Then we start right now."

I looked at the time. 2:46.

"Not now," I said. "Seven a.m. With an outside auditor and the town police and the dean of students. In daylight. In front of witnesses."

"You can order that?"

"An audit of university property? That's exactly what I can order." I picked the phone back up. "That's policy. Patrice can look it up."

I spent the next twenty minutes on the phone in my bedroom while Maddie snored on my mattress.

My assistant answered on the first ring.

At seven o'clock the next morning, we stood outside the design school's basement door.

Me. Will. The dean of students, in a rumpled sweater, holding a travel mug like a weapon.

A forensic accountant from Hartford with a clipboard and a camera.

The tired town officer from the night before, who'd volunteered for it.

And a dozen students on their way to early classes who had stopped to see what the new chair was up to now.
