Chapter 14: Two Faces
By dusk Do-yun had stopped shaking, and had started to think.
He sat cross-legged on the main room floor with a blank length of silk across his knees, and a bowl of rice going cold at his elbow.
Gyeol sat opposite him with his back against the wall, bare-chested in the lamplight, hair tied back, a fresh bruise on his collarbone.
He had eaten his rice and half of Do-yun's.
"Then the face on the silk can't be one anyone can swear to," Do-yun said.
Gyeol put down his cup.
"Explain."
"Jang told me the last man's picture showed the whole face. A man who looked at it would see the late King, and say so." Do-yun turned the silk over in his hands. "If I paint a face that is yours, but not his, it's a different picture."
"It's a lie."
"It's a portrait. Every portrait is a lie." Do-yun looked up. "Only this one says what the Consort needs, and nothing the King fears."
Gyeol was quiet for a long moment.
"She needs her son."
"Then I paint her son. His hair, his scar, his shoulders. His hands. Whatever she'd know in the dark." Do-yun took a breath. "And I change the brow and the jaw, so a stranger would never see your father in it."
