Chapter 26: The Dock

I was already out of bed, pulling on jeans with the phone wedged against my shoulder.

"Where's her passport?" I said.

"Her lawyer handed it to the police on Monday, to look cooperative." My father laughed, and it cracked. "I thought she couldn't go anywhere."

"Where are you?"

"In the house. In her dressing room." A pause. "The mirror's open. The safe's empty."

Ambrose was sitting up now, watching my face.

"Dad," I said. "The keys to the company boats. Where are they kept?"

"In my office at the yard. On the board behind the door."

"Does she know the gate code?"

He was quiet.

"It's her birthday," he said. "It's always been her birthday."

I hung up on him.

Ambrose was already reaching for his car keys.

"Which boat?" he said.

"The demo cruiser. Twin engines, full tanks for the boat show." I yanked a sweater over my head. "She's never docked it, but she knows how to point it."

"Nova Scotia?"

"Or anywhere with no extradition and a good hairdresser."

He made a phone call on the stairs, short and flat, and I heard the words harbor patrol.

At twenty past five the yard was grey and empty, the travel lift standing over its slip.
