Chapter 7: The Coat

"My camel coat," I repeated.

"The long one, with the horn buttons." Sabine tilted her head. "You love that coat."

I did.

It had been gone from the hook behind my bedroom door on Saturday night.

I'd thought I'd left it at school.

"Where is it now?" I asked.

"How would I know? It's yours."

The doorbell rang again.

Ambrose didn't move from the doorway.

"Are we expecting anyone else from your family?" he asked me.

"I'm not," said Gran.

Sabine looked at her nails.

Ambrose went to the door.

Two Boston police officers came back down the hall with him, a heavyset older man and a younger woman with a notebook already open.

"We had a call about a vulnerable adult at this address," the woman said. "A Mrs. Winifred Haverhill?"

"That's me," said Gran. "Do I look vulnerable?"

The older officer looked at her cane, her men's watch and her expression, and visibly decided not to answer.

"Ma'am, your daughter-in-law is concerned that someone in this house has been tampering with your medication."

"Somebody has," Gran said. "It isn't anybody in this house."

Sabine stepped forward with the pharmacy bag in both hands.

"Officer, I'm so sorry, I didn't want it to come to this," she said, lifting the bag toward them. "My sister did it."

The young officer wrote that down.

They both looked at me.

The last time, I'd stood in my parents' kitchen while a detective asked who filled the pill box, and I'd said, "I did," and watched my whole life close like a door.

"What time does it say?" I asked.

The older officer took the receipt from the bag and squinted at it.
