The ballroom at the Plaza held six hundred people, and every one of them wanted to shake Damon's hand.

He shook them.

He wore a black tuxedo that Elias had chosen, and a white shirt buttoned to the throat.

Under the collar, the bite from the locker room was still faintly yellow.

He had been smiling for forty minutes.

"You can stop now," Elias said low, at his shoulder. "Nobody's counting your teeth."

"I'm being charming."

"You're being a billboard."

Elias stood a half step behind him in a dark grey suit, with a hand resting in the small of Damon's back.

It was a reasonable place for a hand.

Damon could feel the exact span of each finger through two layers of cloth.

"Dr. Kosmas!"

The woman who came through the crowd toward them wore a floor-length black gown and a single strand of pearls.

She moved with the unhurried ease of someone who had never had to ask for a table.

She was in her mid forties, with a sleek honey-coloured bob and sharp blue eyes, and her smile was the kind that took inventory.

"Camilla Arkwright," she said, and held out a hand. "I'm so glad you came."

"Ms. Arkwright. Thank you for the honour."

"Camilla, please. We're going to be great friends." She turned the smile to Elias. "And Mr. Thorsen. At last."
