Chapter 19: The Trophy Case
Rory was standing in the front hall of the Oakes house with his arms folded when Dash came through the door.
He was six foot five, and he filled the doorway to the living room completely.
"Where is he?" Dash said.
"Kitchen. He's making a sandwich." Rory jerked his chin at the glass cabinet beside the stairs. "That's the case."
It was a tall cabinet lined with crew trophies and framed photographs of eights.
On the middle shelf, between a silver cup and a rowing blade signed by half a dozen old men, sat a small gray plastic case.
Beside it were two flesh-colored things the size of coffee beans.
Dash stopped breathing.
"He put them on a pedestal," Rory said. "I saw them from the window. He wanted to be seen."
"He's a collector."
"He's an idiot."
Dash opened the cabinet and took the aids out of it with two fingers.
They were warm from the light.
He put them into his own pocket, carefully, and zipped it shut.
"Haverford," said Tripp from the kitchen door, with a sandwich in his hand. "Breaking and entering. Nice."
