Chapter 14: The Forty-Ninth Night
The door of the herb shed was barred from inside.
Jae-ryeong put his shoulder to it, and the bar snapped.
He went in with the vial in one fist and the letter in the other.
The shed was hot and low and smelled of iron.
A brazier glowed in the corner under a copper pot.
On the long table stood a row of empty glass vials, a basin, and a lamp turned down to a bead.
On a stool beside the table sat Seol, in his shirtsleeves, with his left arm laid out on a folded cloth.
A needle as long as a hand stood in his forearm, just below the crook.
It was hollow, with a glass tube at the end.
Down the tube ran something dark and slow and bright, into the white basin.
Jae-ryeong had thought he knew what blood looked like.
He had seen it on a hundred training grounds.
He had never seen it come out of someone he wanted to keep.
Seol had gone the grey of old paper.
His hair hung loose over his shoulder, silver at the roots and black at the tips.
