Chapter 20: Evidence
The Hall's tents stood at the north end of the field, in a ring of black felt.
Four guards in black robes stood at the flap.
Master Mo had gone to dine with the Alliance elders, and the Hall had gone with him, all but these four.
Seol had given Jae-ryeong a small clay pot at dusk.
"Lay it by the brazier at the corner," Seol said. "Upwind. It will smoke, and it will smell of plum."
"Plum wine?"
"Don't you dare laugh."
Jae-ryeong laid it by the brazier.
The smoke rose thin and sweet and rolled across the snow.
Before long, the first guard sat down.
Soon after, the other three were leaning on each other.
Do-yun walked past them with a tray of persimmons.
He wore an apron and a servant's cap and an expression of great seriousness.
"Tea boy," he told the guards. "Tea boy, coming through."
Nobody answered.
He went into Mo's tent.
Jae-ryeong stood in the snow with his hand on his sword, waiting in the freezing wind.
Then the flap opened, and Do-yun came out with the same tray and the same persimmons.
