Chapter 7: The Black Thorn

Seol woke at dawn with a start.

Jae-ryeong was sitting on the edge of the bed with the thorn in his fist.

Seol looked at his face, and then at the thorn, and all the color left him.

"Where did you find that?"

"In my bedpost. Above your head."

"It wasn't there when I came."

"I know. I looked." Jae-ryeong held it out. "Whose is it?"

Seol didn't take it.

"It's a Nine Thorns recall," he said at last.

"A messenger slips into a house, drives it into the wood and leaves."

"Every blade gets one in the end."

"Nobody ever sees the messenger."

"What does it say?"

"It says come home."

"Is that all?"

Seol looked at the paper.

"It's from Master Mo Cheol-ryang," he said, flat and quiet. "The head of my Hall."

"He raised me from the age of eight."

"He says to stop the doses."

Jae-ryeong went cold again, in a way that had nothing to do with the poison.

"Stop them."

"And come back across the ridge by the new moon."

"If I don't, the Hall will send another blade, and she won't be as polite as I was."

"She?"

"She won't knock, Jae-ryeong." Seol's eyes met his. "That's the point."

Jae-ryeong sat down heavily beside him.

"You always knew you might get this."

"Every blade does."

"And you came back last night anyway."

"You came back hours late, with a cut on your shoulder and a recall on the way."

"And you opened yourself up in a cold room for me."
