Chapter 15: Name

Joelle's POV

I had been trying to say it for twenty-four hours.

I had practiced in the shower and in the car, and once, out loud, to the refrigerator.

Now it was Sunday night, with the pool lights on, and every time I opened my mouth it came out as something else.

"Get in," I said instead.

He was standing on the deck in his boxers with his ears red.

The underwater lights turned the whole pool a hard clean aqua, and the water was so clear I could see my own toes on the bottom.

I was already in it, naked, with my hair floating.

I had put the notebook on the stone coping by the steps, under a towel, where I could see it.

I hadn't opened it.

"Terms say Tuesday," Nico said.

"You're quoting terms at me?"

"You wrote them."

"I burned them," I said. "Get in the water."

He got in.

He came down the steps and across the shallow end with the water climbing his ribs, and he didn't hurry.

I watched him come, with the light moving on his chest, and the little medal swinging on its chain.

He stopped in front of me.

I put both hands flat on his shoulders and felt how warm he was against the cool of the water.

"You're shaking," I said.

"You're looking at me."

"I always look at you."

"You look at the pool," he said. "Or my hands. Tonight you're looking at my face."

He was right, and I didn't have an answer, so I kissed him.

It was slow at first, with his hands coming up out of the water to hold my jaw.

His mouth tasted of the lime he'd had in his drink.

I opened it with my tongue, and he made a sound low in his chest and pulled me against him.

Our bodies slid together, wet and warm, with nothing between us but his boxers.

I hooked my thumbs into the waistband and pushed them down.
