Chapter 16: The Dragon Over Harrowgate
Lord Hask took the ring off my thumb as gently as a nurse.
"The stair is no place for a princess," he said.
"I will tell the guard at its foot that he is relieved of his duties and his head."
"He knew nothing."
"Then he will die of it quickly.
"Come, Highness."
He walked me back to my chamber with his lamp swinging, and he did not ask what I had seen.
That frightened me more than a question.
At the door he turned the key in the lock himself.
"Your brother sleeps soundly tonight," he said through the wood.
"Please remember that, whatever you do."
I stood in the dark with my fists shut until his steps faded.
Then I took the red silk from my saddlebag and tied one sleeve to the iron bar of the window.
The rest of the dress hung down the grey wall.
Nobody in the courtyard looked up.
I did not sleep.
At noon they came for me, six guards and a captain, and walked me down to the throne hall without a word.
They had mended the window above the dais with new glass.
