Chapter 13: Don't Come Saturday
Gage's POV
The microphone was warm from Brecken's hand.
I held it and looked up into the stands, where five thousand people were looking at one gray hood.
She had taken the hood down.
She stood there with her chin up and her glasses on, and she did not run.
I had planned a lot of ways this might go over the last week.
I had not planned a stadium.
"Her name is Hallie Vandiver," I said. "She has charted every snap I've taken for two seasons."
Nobody made a sound.
"She told me I look left on twelve of fourteen third downs, and she was right. No coach ever told me that."
Down at the front, my father had stopped pointing.
"I've listened to her breakdowns every night before every game since I was a junior. So if you came here tonight to laugh at her, go home."
I turned and held the microphone out to Brecken.
He took it with a smile that had stopped working.
"Not here," I told him, low. "Not now."
Then I walked off the stage and into the tunnel, because if I stayed on that field one more minute I was going to hit him in front of five thousand people.
My father caught me at the mouth of the tunnel.
He had his producer behind him and a phone already up.
"You went on a stage and defended the girl who made you a laughingstock," Dad said.
"She didn't make me one. You read it on the air."
"She wrote it."
"She wrote what she saw. You made it a joke."
His face turned dark red above the camel collar.
