Chapter 13: Benched
"Say that again," Cade said into the phone.
His forehead was still against mine, and I felt him go rigid.
"The booster president called my house at eleven, and he wants you on the bench for homecoming," Coach repeated.
"He says the board's worried about your image."
"What image?" Cade asked.
"The one on the internet, son."
"Be at practice Monday at three."
"He'll be there, and I'd like you to keep your mouth shut."
Coach hung up before Cade could answer.
We sat on the cold tar roof with the blanket sliding off our shoulders.
"Paisley's dad," I said.
"Her dad," Cade said.
He looked at the dark shape of his house across the side yard.
"I'm not keeping my mouth shut."
On Monday I stood at the chain-link fence beside the practice field with the yearbook camera and a permission slip I had signed myself.
The team was running a drill when a black pickup pulled into the lot.
