Chapter 18: The Booster Dinner

The Bobcat Boosters held their homecoming dinner on the Tuesday of homecoming week, in the banquet room of the Elks lodge.

There were forty round tables, a buffet of dry chicken, and a banner that said GO BOBCATS above a podium.

I wore my yearbook lanyard and carried the camera, which gave me a reason to be there.

Joanne wore her good gray dress, and Russ wore the only suit he owned, which was blue and thirty pounds ago.

"I look like the groom at a bad wedding," he muttered, tugging his tie.

"You look fine," my mother said.

"I talked to my nurse manager this morning."

"She told the administrator that if he called her staff about their private lives again.

She'd tell him exactly what he could do with his clipboard."

"So you're not in trouble?" Cade asked.

"I'm in a banquet hall with free pie," she said.

"I'm doing great."

The booster president met us at the door with both hands out.

He shook Russ's hand twice, and kissed my mother's cheek before she could stop him.
