Chapter 16: Wheels Up

Elena turned and went back down the steps to her car.

She didn't wait to see what I'd say.

She'd never once had to.

The reporters started shouting again.

Clyde pulled me back through the glass doors into the jail lobby, where they couldn't follow.

The night sergeant looked up, sighed, and went back to his paperwork.

"Six in the morning," Clyde said.

"Six in the morning."

"That's seven hours."

"I know how long it is."

He stood there in his bloody shirt, turning his hat around in his hands.

"You have to go," he said.

"I know."

"Those ranchers of yours. You've got to be there to fight for 'em. You can't do it from a jail lobby in Austin."

"I know, Clyde."

"Then quit looking at me like that, or I'll do something real stupid again."

I didn't quit.

He didn't do anything.

He just looked back at me, his gray-blue eyes steady, his jaw tight.

"Come with me," I said.

He went very still.
