Chapter 24: Everything He Owns

Odessa Maddox came to Keane Capital at ten the next morning, in a camel coat, with two lawyers and no flowers.

The firm took up the first floor of the old mill, one long room of brick and iron.

It held eleven desks and a stone fireplace at the far end.

All eleven people at the desks were on the phone with banks.

They stopped when she walked in.

Cora stood beside Ronan at the glass wall of his office and watched her cross the floor.

"Don't say anything," Ronan said, very quietly. "Let her talk."

"I know."

"I mean it, Cora."

"I know," she said. "I'm only going to stand here."

Odessa stopped in the middle of the room and smiled at the staff.

"Good morning, everyone," she said, in her charity-luncheon voice. "Please don't stop on my account. I'm only here to help Mr. Keane."

The lawyers set a leather folder on the nearest desk and opened it.

Ronan came out of his office and stood at the head of the room with his arms folded.

"You called my loans," he said.

"A bank called your loans." Odessa tilted her head. "Banks are so unpredictable. But I think I can fix it."

"I'm listening."

"I understand you hold twenty-two percent of Maddox Systems."

"You know exactly what I hold."

"I'd like it back." She slid a paper across the desk. "Twice what you paid. In cash, today, and the banks will call you this afternoon to say it was a clerical error."
