The Registry Said I Was Single, So They Assigned Me My Husband's Boss novel · Chapter 17 of 24

Chapter 17: Full Waiting Room

By morning the post had forty thousand shares.

I read it on the edge of the blue guest bed in the Bexley house, with gray winter light coming through the window.

Spencer had written it well.

My wife was taken from me by the registry, it began. Then came a photo of me in a courthouse dress, smiling at him.

It said I was sick, and that he had stayed with me out of loyalty.

It said a powerful man had used the Mandatory Marriage Act to take a married woman, and that he had requested her by name.

That last part was true.

I read it three times, because it was the only true sentence in the post, and it had been placed so the rest could stand on it.

Below it, the comments ran into the hundreds.

She looks like a gold digger.

If it was legal she wouldn't need the Hallam name.

That poor guy.

One said: Where does she work? A vet clinic? Let's leave a review.

I put the phone face down on the quilt, the way Silvan had put his down.

Then I picked it up again and went to work.

The clinic's parking lot was full at eight, which was not normal.

I thought it was the reporters.

Then I saw the dogs.

A line of owners stood along the building with leashes in their hands, a Labrador, two pugs, a basset hound in a sweater.

Biscuit's owner was at the front, with Biscuit.

"We're not sick," she told me, before I could ask. "We made appointments. Dina said the schedule was empty after the reviews started, so I got on the phone."

"Dina did what?"

"She called every client on the list. She said you'd been lied to by a man in a nice shirt and you needed a waiting room."
