Chapter 14: No Business at Night

The dress Margaret picked for me was midnight blue, and the zipper stuck halfway up my back.

I fought it for five minutes in the guest room. Then I opened the door a crack and found Levi in the hall.

He was wearing a pink blazer.

I looked at it for a while.

"Margaret picked it," he said.

"It's pink."

"I've been told."

"You're the president of a hotel company."

"And you're holding your dress up with one hand." He glanced past me. "Do you need something?"

"The zipper."

He came in and shut the door behind him.

I turned around and lifted my hair off my neck.

His fingers found the zipper at the middle of my back.

He worked it free.

Then he drew it up slowly, one tooth at a time, until it stopped under my hair.

His hand didn't leave.

His knuckles rested against the top of my spine, warm and not quite steady.

I told myself it was the zipper.

"Levi, where do I stand when Lorna comes in?"

"No business at night, Miss Hartwell."

I turned my head.

"It's six o'clock."

"It's dark out." He took his hand away, and I felt exactly where it had been. "Someone made a rule about it."

"Someone is going to throw a candlestick at you."

"The detective is by the coat check. Security is on both doors. Margaret speaks at eight."

He straightened his cuff.

"That was all business, so I'll stop."
