Chapter 8: Show the Mark
The Council envoy held his inspection in the great room, with every lantern lit and every wolf in the pack standing along the walls.
He was a lean grey man with a leather folio and a voice like a closing door.
He did not sit until Hoyt did.
Hoyt had been carried down the stairs and set in his father's carved chair.
He was upright, barely, with a blanket over his knees that nobody had mentioned.
Daphne stood at his shoulder in the cream dress, with one hand resting on the chair back.
Demelza stood by the window with Nan on one side and Rafe on the other.
She wore her mother's moonstone outside her collar, and the stone gave off a faint blue light.
"I'll be plain," the envoy said. "I have a report that the Brocklehurst Alpha has rejected his fated mate and claimed another. The Council must see the bond."
"There's no difficulty," said Hoyt. His voice scraped. "Daphne is my true mate."
"Then show me the mark."
"The mark?"
"A claimed bond leaves a crescent on the inside of the left wrist," said the envoy. "It rises within a day of the rite. The Alpha's wrist, please."
Hoyt pushed back his sleeve and held out his arm.
His skin was bare.
The envoy waited a moment, then made a small note.
"And the lady's."
Daphne held out her wrist with a bright, brittle smile.
It was bare too.
A murmur ran along the wall.
"It's a few days old," Hoyt said. "These things come slowly."
"They do not," the envoy said. "In forty years I have not seen one take longer than a day."
"My bond with Demelza took..."
"Your bond with Miss MacShane showed at the Harvest Moon, on the night you spoke it. I have the Council's own record." The envoy turned a page. "You were seen. A hundred wolves saw you."
