Chapter 15: The Bench Comes Back

Lu Chen had been standing by the window the whole time.

He hadn't said anything.

Now he took a folder out from under his arm and put it on the table.

"I have the shop records," he said.

The older faculty member looked up.

"From where?"

"The tool shop on Dongmen Street. The one that sells clamp sets and lamps. I went there this morning."

He opened the folder.

"There are four of them in the city. Only one sells the adhesive Su Ken uses. It's a two-part epoxy from Guangzhou. They keep a purchase log because it's a restricted item."

He turned the log around.

"July twelfth. Two thousand six hundred. Paid cash. Buyer's mark: Su."

"That proves nothing," Lu Ming said.

"It proves the bench and lamp came from a cash purchase in July."

"Anyone can write Su in a book."

"The shop owner remembers him." Lu Chen closed the folder. "He's been going there since he was fourteen. He brings his grandmother's tea."

The faculty member on the laptop was typing.

"What about the invoice?" Lu Chen said.

The older one looked at him.

"The invoice for the equipment."

"We'll pull it."
