Chapter 12: The Streak
I read it twice, and then I sat up on the steel table with my skirt still round my waist.
"Mateo."
He had one hand on my knee, and he was smiling at the ceiling.
Then he saw my face and the smile went away.
"What's that?" I said.
I held the phone out.
He looked at it a long moment, and his hand left my knee.
"It's the app," he said. "It counts."
"Counts what?" I said.
"Nights."
"Forty-one nights of what?"
He pulled his jeans up and buttoned them, slowly.
"The nights I took your ride," Mateo said. "Or waited for it."
The dish machine had stopped, and the vacuum was off, and the only sound was a compressor cycling at the back of the line.
"Say it plain," I said.
"I turn the app on at twelve-forty-five. I park across from your door. I only take your pickups. If you don't call, I wait."
"How long do you wait?"
"Till your light goes out." He rubbed his face. "Then I go home."
"Every night I worked."
"Every night you worked. Forty-one of them."
I looked at him.
I thought of the first cold rain, and the Camry already at the curb.
