Chapter 15: The Vanity
Someone had put a bowl of green apples on my kitchen island, and nobody who lived in the house would ever have eaten one.
The open house had been going for half an hour when we got there.
Strangers in paper shoe covers walked through the rooms I had painted myself, opening closets and saying "it's smaller than the photos."
The stager had hung a sign on the sectional that said GATHER.
I stood in the front hall in my good coat with my hands in the pockets and counted the things that were not mine.
That was everything, except the pan.
"You okay?" Mateo said, behind me.
"I came for one thing."
"Then let's get it."
The kitchen was at the back, with the light coming in over the sink the way it did at that hour, and I had known exactly who would be standing in it.
My ex-husband was by the island in his fleece vest, with a stack of realtor's flyers in one hand.
Beside him stood a woman about thirty in a white puffer coat, holding a coffee in both hands.
She had been in his phone since February, and I had known her name for months and never said it.
He saw me, and his face did its small pleased thing.
"There she is. And you brought your friend."
I did not look at him.
I looked up at the shelf over the refrigerator, where the stager had arranged a copper pot, a cutting board and a blue-gray enamel roasting pan with a dented lid.
The stager had put my grandmother's pan up there for charm.
She had carried it from Gdansk in 1957, wrapped in a quilt, in a ship's hold, with everything else she owned left behind.
