Chapter 16: The Matinee
I put the remote in his jacket pocket in the lobby, between the popcorn machine and a cardboard standee of a flood.
"What's this?" Mateo said, turning it over.
It was a small gray thing the size of a key fob, with one button and a dial.
"Keep it in your pocket," I said. "Don't push anything until the lights go down."
He looked at me.
Then he looked down at my coat, and my skirt, and my face, which I was keeping very still.
I watched him work it out.
His ears went red, and he swallowed.
"Paulina. We're in a lobby."
"Which is why I did it in the ladies' room," I said. "Where's our theater?"
The old theater on Broadway had two screens and a carpet that had been chosen in 1987.
Theater Two was showing a disaster movie in which a bridge came down about every ten minutes.
We had picked the Sunday matinee because it was the emptiest show in town.
There were seven people in the house, and they were all in the front half.
We took the corner seats in the last row.
An older couple had settled two rows down, a gray-haired man and a woman with a bag of popcorn between them.
The lights went down on the previews.
Beside me, Mateo's hand went into his pocket.
I felt the first pulse before I heard anything, a soft, low hum deep inside me, there and gone.
I stopped breathing.
"Mm," Mateo said, to nobody, in a voice of polite interest.
The hum came again, longer.
I gripped the armrest and stared at the screen, where a man in a hard hat was being very sincere about load limits.
"You can stop whenever you like," I said, out of the side of my mouth.
