Chapter 20: The Walk-In
"Why?" I said.
We were sitting in the exit lane of the car wash with the engine idling, and water was still dripping off the roof.
"A contractor from my pre-apprenticeship offered me a day crew," Mateo said. "Seven to three-thirty, pulling wire in a new building by the river. Real hours toward the card."
"That's good," I said.
"It's very good. I can't do that and drive until four in the morning."
"No."
"I took it Friday. I didn't tell you, because you made a rule about telling you." He looked at me sideways. "I'm telling you."
"You're telling me in a car wash."
"It seemed like the right place."
I put my hand on his knee.
"And the nights?"
"I can't be on a ladder at seven and at the curb at one," he said. "I could be in a bed at two and on a ladder at seven, if I'm careful, and I'm going to try."
I laughed and put my forehead on his shoulder.
"I'm not leaving because of you," he said. "I'm leaving because I'd rather be where you are at closing than driving strangers home."
"Then take the day job."
He shifted into drive.
On Tuesday night the kitchen was cleaned and dark by twelve-fifteen, and I stood in the walk-in with a glass of ice in my hand.
My cooks had gone.
The dish machine had run its last cycle and gone quiet, and the porter was working his way through the front of the house with the vacuum.
Every night he finished the dining room and then walked the back of the house to check the walk-in latch, and every night it took him until one fifteen.
