Chapter 20: Mercy in Public

Yeon-hwa looked down at him for a long time.

Her left arm was hanging useless and her sleeve was full of blood.

Her right hand was steady on her father's sword.

It would have been so easy.

"No," she said.

Jin Gwang-hu's laugh stopped.

"No?"

"You want to die a righteous man, killed by a demon, in front of everyone. So your son can tell it that way."

She sheathed the sword.

"I'm not giving you that. You're going to live a long time with those arms."

She turned her back on him.

She could hear the whole courtyard breathe out.

She walked across the stones to the white-haired elder in the plain grey robe.

"Elder," she said. "He's the Alliance's. Not mine. You judge him."

The elder looked at her.

Then she looked past Yeon-hwa at Jin Gwang-hu on the ground, at the black veins crawling up his neck.

"The Alliance will," she said.

She turned to the crowd and raised her voice, dry and hard.

"Brothers. You saw his sword. You saw his arms. Does any sect here still name this man our Leader?"

Nobody spoke.

Not one voice in six hundred.

She walked up the steps of the dais herself, picked up the Alliance Leader's seal off its cushion, and held it in her hand.
