Chapter 22: The Valley Master
Ye-rin got to the gate before Yeon-hwa did.
By the time the rest of them came down through the terraces, she was standing in the small door with her arms folded.
Outside, on a tall green-saddled horse, sat a heavy man of about fifty-five with a grey moustache.
He had the same quick black eyes as his daughter.
Twenty riders in Hundred Herbs green waited behind him.
"Ye-rin," he said. "Get your things."
"Hello, Father."
"Don't hello me. Get your things. You've disgraced the Valley in front of every sect in the Alliance."
"I said no at my own wedding," Ye-rin said. "In front of witnesses. You taught me to always have witnesses."
"I taught you to marry where you were told."
He saw Yeon-hwa come out behind Ye-rin and his mouth went flat.
"Heavenly Demon," he said, as if the words tasted of vinegar.
"Valley Master."
"My daughter is a guest on your mountain, I'm told. Very well. I'm her father, and guest law ends at the gate."
"It does," Yeon-hwa said. "So ask her."
He looked at her.
"I don't ask my daughter."
"Then you'll go home without her," she said. "She's my guest, my friend and my physician. She leaves if she wants to."
