Chapter 23: The Wall
"Babi," I said. "You can't just hand me a bakery over waffles."
"It's the best time," said my grandmother. "Everyone's too full to argue."
Across the table, Aksel slid a second key ring in front of Soren.
It had a brass tag that said No. 13, and a second, smaller key tied to it with butcher's twine.
"The cannery," said Aksel. "The mayor signed the lease for September while you were baking. The Chamber lent the deposit."
"They lent it?" said Soren.
"They've been waiting forty years to lend you something."
Soren looked at the key for a long time, and then at his grandfather, and then at me.
"Accepted," he said, in a voice like a cracked plate.
"We're moving to the cottage on the lake," said Babi. "It has a porch, and a rocker for two."
"We'd like to sit on it and be seen."
"This is meddling," I said.
"This is a gift," said Aksel. "There is a difference, and it is mostly mustache."
We drove home in two cars, with Dagny's cart on a trailer behind the first one, hung with the last of the paper mustaches.
